Detroit Promise – Tuition-Free College for Detroit Youth

The Detroit Promise offers last-dollar scholarship funding exclusively for residents of Detroit to attend two-year colleges and four-year universities.

How does it work?

If you are a Detroit high-school student or recent graduate, the Detroit Promise can be your tuition-free path to attend one of over 30 Michigan based colleges and universities.

  • Two-Year College:

    • You must be a Detroit resident
    • You must attend any high school in the city of Detroit for at least two years and graduate from a Detroit high school. This includes schools operated by Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) as well as self-governing, charter, private, alternative, home and parochial schools.

  • Four-Year College

    • You must be a city of Detroit resident from ninth grade through 12th grade
    • You must attend for all four years and graduate from any Detroit high school: DPS, EAA, charter, private, parochial, home school, etc. Students who have attended multiple Detroit high schools are eligible
    • Must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA as of Monday, Feb. 1 of senior year
    • Must have a minimum score of 21 ACT/1060 SAT as of senior year (can re-test through Feb.)
    • Meet college or university admission requirements

  • Certificate Programs

    • In addition to the traditional community college associate degree programs, the Detroit Promise is now partnering with select community colleges to offer shorter-term skilled certification tracks. These programs vary in length but are generally between 6-12 months. Upon successful completion of these programs, candidates can often enter directly into skilled employment. Students must verify with the community college that the programs they are interested in are “Pell-Eligible” to ensure that Detroit Promise will cover all tuition and fees not covered by other sources.

This opportunity is available exclusively to residents of Detroit and includes access to two-year colleges such as Henry Ford College, Macomb Community College and Wayne County Community College District, and four-year universities including University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Wayne State.
