For Charles F., hands-on workforce experience helped turn an interest into a path toward his future career.

Through Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT), Charles participated in Detroit Workforce Fund (DWF), where he gained exposure to the workforce and opportunities to develop skills outside of the classroom.

His experiences also gave him opportunities to take on leadership roles and make an impact in his community. Charles helped lead a neighborhood beautification project, contributing to community improvement efforts while strengthening his teamwork and project management skills.

Through Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) and other workforce development opportunities, Charles continued exploring career pathways, connecting with businesses and gaining hands-on experiences that helped him prepare for his future.

“JMG has been very helpful; it opened a lot of doors and exposed me to a lot of different businesses,” Charles said.

That exposure eventually extended into the construction industry.

Charles completed a spring internship with AJAX Paving, where he gained industry experience and an opportunity to learn more about the field firsthand.

Today, Charles is continuing to build on those experiences as a freshman at Eastern Michigan University, where he is studying Construction Project Management.

From participating in workforce programs as a young Detroiter to gaining industry experience and pursuing a related college degree, Charles is laying the foundation for a career in construction, building on the opportunities, leadership skills, and career exposure he gained along the way.
