For Joshua S., preparing for a career started before he ever graduated from high school.

As a junior and senior at Pershing High School, Joshua participated in Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), where he gained access to career exploration, mentorship, and workforce development opportunities that helped prepare him for life after graduation.

Through JMG, Joshua was connected to Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT) and Detroit Workforce of the Future (DWF), a job shadowing program that introduced him to careers within the construction industry. Through the program, he toured companies including Barton Malow, AJAX, Iafrates, and Levy, gaining firsthand exposure to different career possibilities.

Joshua also developed his leadership skills through JMG. He served as president of the JMG Career Association and was recognized as a JMG Exemplary Youth of the Year.

His experience extended beyond career exploration. JMG connected Joshua with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Ally Financial, where he received hands-on mentorship and continued developing the professional and interpersonal skills he would carry into the workforce.

Those experiences ultimately helped Joshua transition from high school into his career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

“In addition to directing me to my present job, JMG gave me experience with construction through the DWF program, helped me gain confidence in speaking with people, taught me the soft skills needed to succeed on the job, and provided a steady hand to guide me after graduation,” Joshua said. “With JMG, if you want help, you get help.”

Joshua successfully completed his first year with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, where he had the opportunity to serve and protect the community he calls home.

From exploring careers as a student at Pershing High School to beginning a career in public service, Joshua’s journey demonstrates how early career exposure, mentorship, and continued support can help young Detroiters build a path toward their future.
