Driver Responsibility Fee Forgiveness

Driver Responsibility Fee Forgiveness for Detroiters

Legislation was recently passed to eliminate all Driver Responsibility Fees in Michigan on October 1, 2018.

While fees will be automatically forgiven on October 1, 2018, Detroiters can earn their Driver’s License back months earlier by completing 10 hours of Free Workforce Development Training. A 10-hour workforce program will be available starting April 23, 2018. The City of Detroit and Detroit at Work are committed to helping Detroiters earn fee forgiveness and license restoration before December 31, 2018, while the $125 Driver’s License Reinstatement Fee is waived.

How to Get Your Driver Responsibility Fees Forgiven Early

1. I’m in an existing payment plan

Are you already on a payment plan to pay off Driver Responsibility Fees that started on or before February 1, 2018?

If you were on a payment plan that started on or before February 1, 2018, your outstanding Driver Responsibility Fees are immediately forgiven. You will receive a phone call from the Department of Treasury letting you know your debt is forgiven. The phone call will direct you to call the Secretary of State (888-767-6424) to find out next steps for getting your license back.

2. I’m currently enrolled in workforce training

Are you currently enrolled in a Detroit at Work workforce training program?

If you are currently enrolled in an existing Detroit at Work workforce training program, your fees are immediately forgiven. If you qualify for forgiveness this way, the Department of Treasury will send a letter to your home address and direct you to the Secretary of State for next steps.

3. I want to enroll in the 10-hour training

You can complete a new 10-hour Detroit at Work workforce training program before October 1, 2018. This program will be available during the week of April 23.

If you complete 10 hours of workforce training with Detroit at Work, you will have your Driver Responsibility Fees forgiven. Once you have completed the 10-hour training program, staff at a Detroit at Work Career Center will assist you in sending the Workforce Development Program Verification Form to the Department of Treasury to have your fees waived. Training will be offered online, at Detroit at Work Career Centers, and at community events throughout the city. Please check back here during the week of April 23 for specific details about the program and information on how to participate.

4. I will wait until October 1, 2018

You will receive full forgiveness for your Driver Responsibility Fees beginning October 1, 2018.

All Driver Responsibility Fees will be waived on October 1, 2018.

Driver’s License Restoration

There are multiple scenarios for getting your license back after your Driver Responsibility Fees are waived. It depends on how long your license has been suspended. Please see below for two common examples. Please note, if your license is suspended for other violations, such as a failure to appear in court or driving on a suspended license, among others, you must clear these issues before being able to reinstate your license.

Reinstating License – Process Example 1

  • If you have no other outstanding fees or court action required, and
  • If your license was suspended for less than 4 years.

You can have your license reinstated at $0 cost (The $125 Reinstatement Fee is waived through December 31, 2018.)

Reinstating License – Process Example 2

  • If you have no other outstanding fees or court action required, and
  • If Your license was suspended for more than 4 years.

You must:

  • Reapply for your license
  • Take written and on the road tests (Estimated at $50+)
  • Obtain a Temporary Permit ($25)
  • If you get your license before December 31, 2018 the costs are approximately $75
  • If you get your license after December 31, 2018 costs are approximately $200

Questions?

If you have additional questions, please contact the Michigan Department of Treasury or Michigan Department of State directly. Treasury will be able to answer questions about getting your remaining Driver Responsibility Fees waived and the Department of State will be able to advise you on your driving record and how to restore your Driver’s License.
